France launches debate on GM crops

A committee of "wise men" has been appointed by the French government to lead a two-month public debate on genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The debate will particularly focus on the high levels of public concern about potential risks to conventional crops from the country's ongoing programme of GM crop field trials. It will also test citizens' reactions to a recent report from French policy advisors recommending gradual commercialisation of GM crops (EED 27/09/01). See press release.
