NiCad batteries' future still uncertain

It remains unclear whether the European Commission will propose an EU ban on nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries, indicates a recent letter from environment commissioner Margot Wallström to three Nordic environment ministers, which has been seen by ENDS Europe DAILY. Ms Wallström says the Commission is still "examining an appropriate mix of instruments" to handle NiCads. These include closed loop take-back systems, deposit schemes and substance bans (EED 02/07/01). A proposal is expected "in the coming months," she says. The ministers had earlier urged a total ban (EED 27/08/01).
