Contaminated nuclear shipment reported

The German environment ministry today reported the discovery of radioactive contamination on a nuclear fuel container following a journey from France's La Hague reprocessing plant to the Stade power station in Lower Saxony. This is the first such incident since international shipments of spent fuel to and from Germany restarted this spring following a three-year ban imposed after similar contamination incidents in early 1998. The Lower Saxony authorities have been asked to provide urgent clarification, and further fuel movements to and from Stade have been banned pending remedial measures. See press release.
