WWF digs in to defend eastern nature

Environmental group WWF yesterday launched a new push to safeguard nature conservation in EU accession states. The group said it would campaign for full implementation of the wild birds and habitats directives, describing it as "especially urgent" in accession countries because natural areas would come under "heavy development pressure". Other priorities include building the capacities of eastern environmental NGOs - WWF is to open several new offices in accession countries - and continued calls for reform of the EU's common agricultural policy and implementation of the water framework directive.
