Environment ministers from central and eastern European nations aspiring to EU membership gathered in Brussels today for their annual meeting with the European Commission and EU governments, represented by Belgian environment minister Magda Aelvoet. Agenda items included debate on the economic implications of implementing EU environmental laws (EED 19/10/01). Fifteen municipal authorities also received the "cities towards compliance" award, designed to reward local action to comply with EU environmental legislation.
