The European Commission has set out requirements for EU member states to monitor pesticide residues in fruit, vegetable and cereal products over the four years from 2002. Established under directives passed in 1990 and 1996, the monitoring programme will cover 41 pesticides and 24 food products, with each combination of product and pesticide tested at least once over the period. Results appear in the EU's annual pesticide residue survey (EED 30/07/01). The Commission recently announced a shake-up of legislation setting maximum residue limits (EED 09/11/01).
