2002 "will be the year of renewables," UK energy minister Brian Wilson said on Friday, foreshadowing entry into force on 1 April of an obligation on British electricity suppliers to buy renewably generated power (EED 06/08/01). In addition to the national target of a 10% renewable share of electricity by 2010, regional targets as well would now be set, the minister announced. The statement continues a steady stream of "pro-renewable" pronouncements by Mr Wilson since last summer, when he was tarred by the environmental groups as "pro-nuclear" instead (EED 26/06/01).
