Sweden's environment ministry today announced a further 560 site nominations for the EU's Natura 2000 network. This brings the country's final, revised list to 3,910 sites; 3,465 nominated for protection under the habitats directive and 445 under the wild birds directive. A ministry spokesperson said that the total package should now satisfy the European Commission, which will review it this spring. Sweden has been gradually increasing the number of sites (EED 20/06/01) suggested for EU protection since the Commission warned of court action in 2000 (EED 11/01/00). See press release.
