Major European businesses are backing a two-year investigation into the relationship between e-business and sustainability. Launched this week, the Digital Europe project is aiming to determine whether digital technology will complement or conflict with sustainable development. Institutes in Italy, Germany and the UK will carry out the work, which is being supported by companies including Vodafone, Gruppo Uni Credito, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, EMI, Barclays Bank and AOL Europe. The project's key environmental objectives are to quantify the implications of growing e-business for resource productivity and transport efficiency. See Digital Europe.
