UK agency moves to clear old fridges backlog

The Anglo-Welsh environment agency today issued draft guidelines for the recovery of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) from refrigerators and freezers before disposal. An absence of specialised facilities for removing ODS from cooling appliances has caused a disposal crisis in the UK (EED 06/12/01). The guidelines will help licensed operators to start dealing with the backlog of appliances before the summer, the agency said, by which time the necessary specialist equipment is expected to be available.
