Truckers bristle over Alpine restrictions

Restrictions on goods vehicle use of the St Gothard and Mont Blanc trans-Alpine road tunnels as well as Austria's ecopoint truck rationing system are costing business euros 1m per day, according to the industry's representative body, the International road transport union (IRU). Based on independent data collected for the European Commission, IRU reckons the restrictions have increased transport costs on the affected routes by 12.5%. They are also resulting in "unnecessary extra fuel consumption" of 300,000 litres per day, the organisation claims. See press release.
