Chemical watchdog update on risk evaluation

The European chemicals bureau has published its latest newsletter on the EU's existing substances assessment programme following a March meeting of national chemicals experts. Among substances highlighted, benzene is shown to be causing concern at sewage plants, with problems identified at many sites. But "unintentional releases" from refineries, petrol stations and road traffic present no environmental concern. The phthalate BBP has been cleared of presenting a danger in products, but could be causing concern via environmental exposure. Altogether 56 of 141 substances on EU priority lists have now been assessed. See ECB newsletter.
