Portuguese inventory of toxic waste

The Portuguese environment ministry yesterday commissioned a national inventory of toxic industrial waste. The initiative is seen as a first step to finding alternatives to the co-incineration of toxic waste in cement kilns as promised by the country's new government after it took power in March (EED 16/04/02). Despite four previous attempts to assess Portuguese industrial waste generation, environment minister Isaltino Morais described current estimates, based on only 9% of companies, as "largely unreliable".
