Ciba wins Dutch responsible care award

Use of industrial ecology techniques has earned Netherlands-based chemicals firm Ciba a "responsible care" award from the Association of the Dutch chemical industry (VNCI). By piping nitrate-containing effluent to the Sappi papermill, where it is used as an oxygen donor for wastewater treatment, Ciba has virtually eliminated its nitrate discharges. The project, which went on stream on 18 March, "characterises a company that is already at an advanced stage in the implementation of the responsible care culture", said the VNCI jury.
