A downbeat first evaluation of progress towards meeting Sweden's 15 environmental objectives has been made in an official Environmental objectives council report. Targets for reduced climate impact, a non-toxic environment, zero eutrophication and sustainable forests will be extremely difficult to meet in the given timeframe, the watchdog says. Although trends are promising in some areas - such as air quality and acidification - further action will be required for all if long-term goals are to be met. The 15 objectives were set out in 1999 and enshrined in law last year (EED 04/05/01). See the report.
