UK confirms stricter air quality targets

The UK government today confirmed stricter English air quality standards for fine particles, benzene and carbon monoxide, and a first objective for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The standards are the same as proposed last September apart from a slight relaxation in the target annual mean for 2010 for benzene to 5 micrograms per cubic metre. The new PAH target is 0.25 nanograms per cubic metre as an annual mean by 2010 (EED 17/07/01). The standards become part of the UK's national air quality strategy launched in early 2000 (EED 19/01/00). See press release.
