Germany passes wind capacity milestone

Germany's wind power production capacity officially passed 10,000 megawatts this week, with activation of a new turbine in Lower Saxony. Inaugurating the turbine, environment minister Jürgen Trittin stressed that wind power now produced 3.5% of Germany's electricity, while the sector employed 120,000. More than 12,000 wind turbines have been installed in Germany since the early 1980s, far more than in any other country (EED 21/02/02). See environment ministry press release.
