Finland combats arsenic in water

After six years of research, the Finnish environment institute has announced the development of two methods for removing arsenic from well water to make it safe to drink. Arsenic contamination is a serious problem in Finland; wells are a common source of drinking water, especially in rural areas, and the EU's arsenic limit is exceeded at 7% of them. Finnish households will be able to fit water filters or reverse osmosis equipment; the former is cheaper but create up to 14 litres of hazardous waste per household per year. See press release.
