New attack on UK nuclear energy loan

Belgian minister for sustainable development Olivier Deleuze has joined a chorus of protest over the UK government's decision to prop up crisis-hit nuclear electricity generator British Energy. Mr Deleuze complained to EU competition commissioner Mario Monti on 19 September, his department revealed today. Mr Deleuze is challenging the admissibility under EU law of the loan facility, echoing other critics of the decision (EED 20/09/02). He also questions whether it would be legal for the UK government to exempt nuclear electricity from the national "climate change levy". See Olivier Deleuze's cabinet.
