Commission stands firm on mine hazard

The European Commission is continuing to reject European parliament calls for the Seveso II directive on major accident hazards to apply to mines using mechanical methods to process minerals. The change would amount to a major extension of the directive's scope to include facilities such as coal mines (EED 05/07/02). In an amended proposal for changes to Seveso II published this week, the Commission says that only the waste could pose a problem, and that this will be dealt with in forthcoming separate proposals on mining wastes. See Seveso II amended proposal.
