Spain launches industrial pollution register

Inventory will bring together data from 11 industry sectors under remit of IPPC directive

Spain's environment ministry yesterday announced the launch of a national pollutant emission register, which it described as "the first step" in the implementation of the EU's 1996 integrated pollution prevention and control (IPPC) legislation. A Spanish law transposing the directive was passed after considerable delay in June (EED 18/06/02).

An estimated 6000 industrial facilities in 11 different sectors falling under the scope of the IPPC directive have until the end of the year to supply regional authorities with 2001 data on emissions of 50 key pollutants included in the European pollutant emission register (EED 21/07/00).
