EU buildings efficiency law agreed

The final text of a new EU directive to improve energy efficiency in buildings was agreed this week, when the European parliament's energy committee endorsed a compromise deal with the council of ministers. The council decided to revise its first reading common position on the law and adopt the six-year maximum implementation deadline demanded by the committee last month (EED 13/09/02). In return, the committee dropped seven minor amendments that had accompanied this demand. The parliament's plenary will rubberstamp the common position next week, avoiding a protracted second reading. See parliament news flash.
