Warning over "failing" UK waste strategy

The UK is set to miss by a wide margin its own targets for greener waste management, waste industry association Esa has warned. An Anglo-Welsh waste strategy issued in 2000 targeted recovery of two-thirds of municipal waste by 2015 (EED 25/05/00). Based on present performance, said Esa, England would fail to divert almost 11m tonnes of municipal waste from landfill thus reaching only 60% of the 2015 recovery target. The government is expected shortly to issue new proposals to speed up growth in waste recovery and recycling. See press release.
