Hydrogen group formally launched

The high-level strategy group promoting hydrogen and fuel cell technology was formally launched today in Brussels by European Commission president Romano Prodi. Details of the new group's role and make-up were announced last month (EED 11/09/02). The group will issue its first report in mid-2003, proposing action to support a sustainable hydrogen economy and fuel cell industry. "Hydrogen and fuel cells... can contribute significantly to our policy objective of replacing 20% of automotive fuel with alternative fuels by 2020," said energy commissioner Loyola de Palacio at the launch.
