UK firms embracing cleaner production

Official figures on environmental expenditure by British firms have revealed a further shift towards cleaner production. For the first time in 2000 over half of environment-related capital expenditure (57%) went on integrated processes rather than end-of-pipe solutions, up from just 29% in 1997 (EED 02/08/01). Total environmental spending, including operational expenditure, was UK£4.2bn (€6.6bn), approximately 0.7% of turnover. All EU states are required to report on corporate environmental expenditure under the structural business statistics regulation. See press release.
