UK urges stricter pesticide approval rules

A strengthening of the approval process for pesticides used on crops that takes into account all sources of exposure is being urged by a UK government-backed toxicology committee. While the committee's 300-page report plays down evidence of potential effects of combined or multiple exposure to pesticides, it nevertheless recognises that their impact "is only rarely addressed by European regulatory authorities". It calls for a "systematic framework" to decide whether to carry out a combined risk assessment of exposure as part of the approval process. See report.
