EU publishes 2003 sustainability indicators

The seven environment indicators that will feature in next spring's annual EU sustainability report will be virtually identical to those used in this year's inaugural report, a new European Commission report reveals. The indicators are greenhouse gas emissions, measured this time as progress made towards agreed reduction targets; energy intensity of the economy; transport volume relative to GDP; transport modal split; urban air quality; municipal waste generation; and the share of renewables in energy generation. A list of six future indicators includes two that were recently judged impractical (EED 23/09/02). See report.
