Industry challenges German drinks pack LCA

Packaging type has negligible impact on product environmental impacts, says Europen

European packaging chain representative body Europen has disputed the findings of a new life-cycle assessment (LCA) of drinks packaging released last week by Germany's environment agency. The organisation reiterated its view that planned German deposits on one-way drinks packaging would unfairly distort the EU single market.

The agency's study broadly confirmed the findings of an earlier LCA in 2000, both concluding that refillable containers are generally more environmentally friendly than disposables (EED 24/10/02).
