Finance ministers delay EU energy tax deal

Finance ministers have deferred yet again finalisation of a long-awaited deal on European Commission proposals for an EU energy taxation framework. Though the item was on the agenda of today's council meeting in Brussels, Danish finance minister Thor Pedersen said too many outstanding differences remained on three key issues - taxation of diesel, the treatment of energy-intensive industries, and the fate of existing exemptions from national energy taxes (EED 09/10/02). Agreement would be reached at the next council meeting on 3 December, he said. See EU council of ministers.
