Social impacts of fishing reform addressed

The European Commission has put forward a draft action plan to help deal with the socio-economic impacts of limiting fishing of certain stocks, outlined in its draft reform of the common fisheries policy this spring (EED 28/05/02). Actions include measures to favour small-scale fishing, such as reserving certain coastal fishing grounds for small fleets. These actions should be used by member states to alleviate the short-term consequences on fishermen of proposed conservation measures, the Commission says. See press release.
