Council closes ranks on indicators

Foreign ministers yesterday told the European Commission to alter the list of indicators it has proposed for next year's EU sustainable development "synthesis" report to take account of changes requested by environment ministers (EED 22/10/02). In October the environment council called for two of the seven environment-related indicators - energy intensity and modal split of transport - to be moved to the "general economic background" heading. It said they should be replaced with two new indicators, "protected areas for biodiversity" and "fish stocks in marine waters". See general affairs council minutes.
