EU phthalates in toys ban extended again

The EU's emergency ban on the use of six kinds of phthalate softeners in PVC toys designed to be mouthed by under-threes has been renewed for a further period of three months running to 20 February next year. This is the order's twelfth renewal since it was first introduced in 1999. Member states have still to reach agreement on whether to make the ban permanent or instead to introduce limits on phthalate migration into children's saliva (EED 21/05/02). See Commission decision.
