Boliden sued over Aznalcollar disaster

The regional government of Andalucia, Spain, announced yesterday that it is suing mining group Boliden for €90 million following the 1998 toxic spill from a mine tailings dam in Aznalcollar. The claim relates to the cost of cleaning and restoring affected areas. A government spokesman said the administration was prepared to fight "for as long as it takes to make Boliden pay". Boliden denies responsibilty. It has appealed against a fine imposed by the Spanish government and is suing Dragados, the Spanish company responsible for constructing the dam (EED 27/09/02).
