EU bids to shed green protectionism mantle

EU trade commissioner Pascal Lamy has welcomed the launch yesterday of an initiative aimed at helping developing countries build environmental and social factors into their export strategies. The Sustainable trade and innovation centre (Stic) has been developed with European Commission support and was first put forward as a sustainability partnership initiative at this year's Johannesburg world summit. EU support for Stic is intended to counter claims that the bloc's pursuit of high environmental standards is disguised protectionism. See press release and Stic.
