An estimated 100,000 people demonstrated in Valencia yesterday against the Spanish government's national hydrological plan. The event's scale confirmed continuing strong public opposition to proposed major north-south water transfer projects (EED 11/03/02). The atmosphere at the march was tense after the regional government, which is controlled by Spain's governing Popular party, described it as a "provocation". Organisers timed the protest to embarrass the Spanish government, which is currently hosting the eighth conference of the international Ramsar convention on wetlands protection in Valencia.
