EU accession state funds "ignore environment"

EU funding for states preparing to join the bloc too often targets large infrastructure projects that ignore environmental considerations, green NGOs claimed yesterday. In a report, Friends of the Earth Europe and CEE Bankwatch also alleged that "end-of-pipe" solutions to environmental problems were being favoured over "more proactive approaches" such as recycling and waste reduction. They also called for changes to the structure of the EU funding programmes to support greater transparency and more monitoring and public participation. See press release and report.
