The European wind energy association (Ewea) announced on Tuesday a 75 gigawatt (GW) wind power generation target by 2010 for the EU's existing 15 member states. Reaching it would involve a tripling of current generation capacity and deliver half of the EU's renewables directive target of increasing to 22% the share of electricity produced from renewable sources by 2010. Ewea's previous target for 2010 was 40GW, but suggestions that it should be increased - given the pacy growth of Europe's wind power industry - had already emerged three years ago (EED 04/09/00).
