EU environment commissioner Margot Wallström has dramatically escalated a British row over imports of old US warships for scrapping by publicly opposing the deal. During a visit to Britain on Monday, Ms Wallström questioned the legal basis for the trade, said the ships should be kept in America, and said she would take up the issue with both governments. UK environmental groups have fiercely opposed the imports (EED 03/09/03). The commissioner's intervention adds a completely new political dimension to the controversy. See BBC news report.
