UK green taxation rebounds in 2002

Environmental taxes in the UK increased in absolute terms and as a percentage of all taxes in 2002 after falling in 2001, the national statistics office has reported. At UK£33bn (€47.4bn) the total was up UK£987m, or 3% on the previous year. The government's climate change levy on business energy use contributed UK£837m in its first full year of operation. A new aggregates tax introduced in April 2002 raised UK£211m. See press release and environmental accounts.
