Meacher urges greener global governance

Michael Meacher, UK environment minister for six years until June, has issued a powerful call for greener global governance. A world environment court should be created with substantial powers to prosecute and fine individuals and companies, he argued in a lecture on Saturday. And a forum of world environment ministers should be set up, with equal powers to the World trade organisation. Improved environmental governance was discussed at last year's Johannesburg global sustainability summit, but is not being seriously pursued, Mr Meacher complains.
