Commission proposes simpler EU waste framework

The European Commission has proposed incorporating the EU's 1975 waste framework directive and subsequent amendments, particularly a law passed in 1991, into a single new directive. The EU executive stresses that the content of the directives to be replaced will be "fully preserved". The development comes as the Commission is preparing for possible changes to the framework directive's annexes. Industry groups are demanding for a more thorough revision, including reassessment of EU definitions of waste and of waste recovery and disposal (EED 10/07/03). See draft directive, reference COM(2003)731.
