"Chaos" warning on road to sulphur-free fuels

Trade body the Norwegian petroleum institute has urged tax breaks for sulphur-free petrol and diesel in order to hasten their introduction, Aftenposten newspaper reports. Institute head Erik Birkeland said he feared that too gradual a changeover between now and 2009 - the EU deadline for all road fuels to be sulphur-free - would create market "chaos". As few service stations had storage capacity to sell different grades simultaneously, the price of sulphur-free fuel should be lowered to make it more competitive.
