The German authorities are to charge fees on hazardous waste passing through Germany on its way from one EU state to another under an ordinance approved by the federal cabinet this week. State and local governments already impose charges on such waste being exported from or imported to Germany, but this is the first time that fees will be charged on waste in transit. A spokesperson for the environment agency said the measure was necessary to harmonise fees on hazardous waste shipments. Total revenues are not expected to exceed a few million euros.
