Radioactive waste fund proposed for Sweden

A study for the Swedish government has recommended a new national system for treatment and disposal of radioactive waste generated by manufacturing industry and other non-nuclear activities. The new system would be financed by a surcharge on the purchase price of relevant products, paid into a national fund similar to one already in operation for nuclear radioactive waste. The new arrangement would take effect from 13 August 2005, in line with an implementation deadline under the EU waste electrical and electronic equipment (Weee) directive. See press release.
