Greens attack packaging conciliation deal

The European parliament's Green group has strongly attacked last Thursday's concilation deal between the parliament and EU governments on new EU packaging rules (EED 05/12/03). The group denounced the two bodies plus the European commission for agreeing to treat burning of packaging waste as recovery. The deal "violates the spirit" of a landmark court judgement in February "and the letter of the EU treaty", it said. Green MEP Patricia McKenna, the sole parliamentary representative to oppose the deal, said her colleagues had "sacrificed the treaty on the altar of Europe's incinerators". See press release.
