A regulation underpinning the EU's Forest Focus programme for "harmonised and comprehensive" monitoring of the health of Europe's forests has been published in the official journal. Operating from January 2003 to December 2006, the scheme's €61m funding will be used to promote data collection and handling, develop risk assessment indicators and methodologies, and reduce forest fires. Two-year national programmes drawn up by member states will have to be submitted to the Commission for approval and monitoring. See regulation 2152/2003.
