Germany warms to Reach chemical rules

European Commission concessions over the scope of the proposed Reach EU chemicals regulation have "to a large extent" overcome earlier fears that it will damage the chemicals industry, the German government said on Friday. Its response to questions posed by the opposition FDP party marks a significant boost for Reach, Germany having lobbied hard for simplification of the proposals before their formal publication at the end of October. Nevertheless, the government is continuing to examine the scope for further simplification without impairing Reach's goals, the statement says. See press release and answer text.
