An agreement on sustainable bird hunting signed by EU environmental and hunting associations on Tuesday will end "more than a decade of heated conflict", the European Commission claimed. Under the deal, environmentalists recognise the legitimacy of hunting while hunters affirm their commitment to the EU's birds directive. National failures to implement the 1979 law have been a longstanding source of friction between the European Commission and Mediterranean member states in particular. The rapprochement between hunters and green NGOs could reduce the number of such disputes in future. See press release and sustainable hunting pages.
