UK condemned over hazardous waste rules

The European court of justice has condemned the UK for a series of failures to implement the EU's 1991 hazardous waste directive. In early 2002, before the case began, the UK admitted the breaches and promised to rectify them. It has still not done so - proposals for new rules were tabled only this summer, to take effect in July 2005. Meanwhile, on the one issue defended by the UK - concerning packaging and labelling of hazardous waste - the court has rejected the Commission's complaint. See judgement in case C-431/02.
