EU go-ahead for second biotech maize

The European Commission has authorised a second GM food for human consumption since the EU's moratorium on such product approvals began crumbling in May (EED 19/05/04). The Commission used its powers to approve maize type NK603 after member states failed to agree for or against in June (EED 29/06/04). It has already approved the same maize for animal feed and industrial processing (EED 19/07/04). NK603 is still not allowed to be grown in the EU but a further approval for cultivation is pending.
